for a 45 minute Remedial Massage partly claimable on your health insurance
At Blackburn North Massage & Fitness we provide science based remedial massage therapy to support injury recovery and identify and treat chronic soft tissue injuries needing regular treatment.  We also provide a range of relaxtional or therapeutic massage services as listed below.

Your problems may include neck and shoulder hypertonicity (tightness), lower and thoracic back tightness, calf and foot tension, quadriceps and hamstring tightness from muscle imbalance and the like.

We also provide sports massage for athletes to assist in obtaining optimum performance, and provide deep tissue massage for ongoing maintenance of active or sedentary bodies to maintain pain free and healthy muscle tissue.

Services Provided:  All treatments are oil on skin unless specified.  All the treatments below are remedial massage treatments and can be partially claimed against your health insurance if you have extras cover that includes remedial massage therapy. Appropriate receipts are issued via email.

Why come to Blackburn North Massage & Fitness for massage treatment?

Massage treatment can take several forms.  From relaxation only treatments to intense deep tissue massage, it is important to consider the qualifications and experience of the therapist, the range of services provided, including post treatment exercise prescription, whether they have national accreditation with a professional body, and matching your particular requirements with the skills of the therapist.  Cost is also an issue if the treatments are of the same or superior quality.  The table below makes a good argument for coming to see me.

Your options for massage related treatment are:

Type of Treatment Available

Endota Spa type treatments  - relaxing treatments averaging about $140 for 60 minutes.
Advantages

  • relaxing environment,
  • qualified beauty therapists,
  • soft relaxing pressure,
  • range of other beauty treatments available
Disadvantages

  • an expensive option,
  • limited physical effect if you have muscle tightness,
  • only really for relaxation and not treatment as such.
  • Individual therapists may not have remedial therapist qualifications or national accreditation.

Shopping Centre Massage Kiosks – a range of treatments averaging about $90 for 45 minutes.
Advantages

  • many convenient locations,
  • wide range of options,
  • walk in treatment.
Disadvantages

  • typically, only 20% of staff are qualified and you don’t always get to choose.
  • unqualified staff treating an injury can and often do make it worse.
  • language difficulties can mean that you don’t get what you actually want or need.
  • the lease arrangements in shopping centres mean that they are more expensive than they used to be.

Blackburn North Massage & Fitness – a range of treatments averaging $75 for 45 minutes
Advantages

  • a qualified, accredited professional therapist with good communication skills and 15 years of experience.
  • a range of treatments for relaxation, muscle tightness, sports massage, and injury repair.
  • a sports science graduate, and therefore able to provide exercise and stretching prescription to assist in the repair of injuries as compared with remedial massage only qualified therapists for whom this is outside their scope of practice and competencies.
  • cheaper pricing because of less overheads but not cheaper service
  • located less than one kilometre from Blackburn Square shopping centre.
Disadvantages

  • Set appointment times.
  • a 24-hr cancellation policy to keep costs down.

Understanding the difference between what massage can do and what it does not do is an important part of treatment. Injuries outside my scope of treatment of remedial massage will be referred to appropriate practitioners such as osteopaths, physiotherapists or sports physicians

Chris is registered with all private health insurance providers and is a member of Massage & Myotherapy Australia.  You can claim part of your treatment from your provider if you have extras.  Please check with your provider for how much that might be.

Treatment Types and Costs

Remedial Massage Treatment

A 45-to-50-minute session for muscle tightness or injury. This consists of an assessment of the problem, a plan of attack negotiated with you, treatment including neural stretching techniques, deep tissue massage, strapping where appropriate and exercise and stretching prescription to assist in recovery.  Most conditions will require a few appointments to resolve, and the frequency and timing of these will be part of the agreed treatment plan. $75

Sports Massage Treatment

a 30-minute legs only light massage for athletes prior to or just after training or competition.  It runs from a standard format which can be changed by negotiation and aims to assist in increasing blood flow to the legs to assist recovery and/or encourage nutrient cycling within the muscle prior to competition. $50

Extended Sports Massage Treatment

A 45-to-50-minute treatment as per a sports massage but extending to the back, shoulders, neck, and arms as well.  This is great for after a heavy competition such as running a marathon or triathlon where the whole body needs assistance to recover. $75

Short Treatment Session

A 30-minute muscle loosening treatment for whatever you feel needs it.  Combinations could include a back and gluteal treatment for sciatic pain, an arm and shoulder treatment for sportsmen who throw, row, hit or bowl.  It’s up to you what you want.  Please indicate the issue in the comments when you book online.  Again, if you have an actual injury and not just tightness, a remedial massage treatment is advised. $50

Relaxational Massage Treatment

a 45-to-50-minute session for general relaxation.  This consists of a ‘whole body’ massage to back, shoulder, neck, legs, arms, feet and finishing with the upper chest and the face.  Use of essential oils and aromatic massage oils is negotiated prior to the session.  This can be a regular treatment or a one-off session. $75

Injury Based Treatment

A 30-minute treatment for a specific injury.  At times, when a remedial massage treatment involves a plan to treat a specific injury a certain way, a 30-minute session is subsequently sufficient , for example a calf muscle strain, or a forearm treatment.  This may include neural stretching techniques, , deep tissue massage, strapping where appropriate and exercise and stretching prescription to assist in recovery.  Most treatments will require several appointments over time. $50

Neck and Shoulder Treatment

A 30-minute treatment for tight neck and shoulders.  A quick assessment of the problem starts the session with tests and range of movement measurements, and we start with neural stretching of the neck and shoulders followed by an oil massage of the upper back, neck, shoulders, and upper chest.  This can be a regular session or a one-off treatment every now and then.  If you have an injury rather than just tightness, a longer remedial massage treatment is advised. $50

Shiatsu Massage

A 45-to-50-minute treatment without oil.  This massage is conducted prone on the massage bed using shiatsu massage techniques through the clothes.  You can choose your preferences prior to treatment.  Usually in this time frame you can expect to have your back, gluteal muscles, shoulders, neck, and upper chest treated. $70

Privacy Protocols

There are strict protocols for physical privacy mandated by Massage and Myotherapy Australia which include things such as changing for the treatment in private (I leave the room) and the covering of body parts not being treated to ensure your comfort.  A full list of these ethical responsibilities is posted in the treatment room.  It seems odd to have to state in writing, but Blackburn North Massage and Fitness adheres to ethical practices that preclude (exclude) any treatment or behaviour that may be construed as sexual in nature.
