Blackburn North Massage & Fitness is Chris Sporton B.Ed (Phys Ed), Dip Rem Massage.
Chris has been an active sportsman and athlete since his teenage years. He was an A Grade track athlete specialising in 400m and 800m events, and was an AFL (VFL then) boundary umpire in the 80s and early 90s where he ran three grand final boundaries in 1985, 1987 and 1989. He worked as a physical education teacher in government schools for 11 years before joining the police force in 1996. He spent the last eight years at VicPol in the Operational Safety Training area teaching recruits and operational members to shoot, defend themselves physically and handle critical incidents. He was promoted to sergeant where he was responsible for updating the fitness testing requirements for recruits and re-writing instructor courses to ensure modern learning principles were introduced to this training. Since his departure in 2011 the fitness requirements have dropped considerably. He now runs Blackburn North Massage and Fitness from home premises using the knowledge he has gained throughout the above experience, and through regular attendance at sports science and remedial massage conferences. |

Remedial Massage Therapy
Neck and shoulder pain is the new black! Sitting at a desk, or even standing at your desk looking at a monitor, or reading your mobile on the train or at home on the couch is very stressful on the neck and trapezius region, yet we all do it excessively resulting in headaches, sore neck and trouble sleeping. Deep tissue techniques combined with neural stretching can resolve and keep the pain at bay. At Blackburn North Massage & Fitness the remedial massage treatments are based on what can be achieved according to research. There is no cupping, acupuncture, wierd massage techniques, or any of the other 'proven not to work' techniques. Whether it's back pain, knee pain from muscular imbalance, calf and foot pain, shoulder pain from tennis or golf, or even poor sleeping position, there are deep tissue techniques that will improve your situation. A sports science background fills the training gap of other remedial therapists in an understanding of muscle attachments, function, balance and interaction and allows a *legal application of exercise prescription usually not available. *Without an exercise degree exercise prescription is outside the scope of practice of your local remedial massage therapist, myotherapist or osteopath. Chris is registered with all private health insurance providers and is a member of Massage & Myotherapy Australia. You can claim part of your treatment from your provider if you have extras. Professional Personal Training
Personal training sessions at Blackburn North Massage & Fitness are science based programs from a degree qualified exercise professional. They are designed to make you fitter and stronger, and if you want, to lose fat along the way. Clients vary from young track athletes looking to improve performance to 60+ men and women looking for better health outcomes into the future. Whilst the sessions will vary according to the participant, the principles are the same. We do weight training with free weights - a whole body session - with weights and reps designed to induce failure at the end of the last set. For those new to weights, we work up to this in a gradual way. This allows fat loss during dietary deficit with a minimum of muscle wastage, or for those trying to build strength or muscle, optimum protein synthesis and therefore muscle growth. The weights session is combined with an interval training session either on a rowing machine, spin bike or treadmill according to client preference. Dietary advice is also given to enable you to take advantage of the physical work. *Did you know that without a sports science or dietetics qualification dietary recommendations are outside the scope of practice of your gym based PT? If you travel a lot, a travel workout or two is included to help you keep up the good work when you can't attend training with me. Sessions can be once, twice or three times a week. It's easy to just show up with your drink and towel and let us take care of your whole fitness program at prices that are half that of your local gym PT sessions. |
